The Department of Rehabilitation of KH is one of the first being established in Hong Kong. It provides in-patient neuro-rehabilitation, ortho-geriatric rehabilitation and general medical rehabilitation service. KH is also one of the largest chest centres in Hong Kong. The Respiratory Medical Department is the first one to inaugurate a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme. Services provided by the departments include management of Pulmonary TB, Lung Cancer, Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Sleep Studies and related disorders. The High Dependency Unit of the department helps to serve patient in critical conditions. The Department of Psychiatry provides in-patient services in the psychiatric wards (215 beds) and the Kowloon Psychiatric Observation Unit (180 beds) newly opened in July 2006, which serve the patients of Kowloon Easter Cluster and Kowloon Central Cluster. It also provides Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Service as well. Apart from inpatient and out patient services, which are also provided by the other 2 clinical departments, the Department of Psychiatry provides a wide range of psychiatric services including day-patient service, community care and consultation visits to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital. The Department finds the first Psychogeriatric Day Hospital and is the first psychiatric department operating a substance abuse clinic. Apart from that, KH serves as the main support base for convalescent patient from Queen Elizabeth Hospital and United Christian Hospital. It also introduces infirmary service in 1995. To improve its service, KH draws up a Master Development Plan of the hospital proposing the redevelopment of the hospital in phases. The first phase is to build a new block and to introduce formal psychiatric wards to provide a more comprehensive range of psychiatric service in the Kowloon region. New services such as Central Sterile Supplies Department, Pathology Laboratory and Medical Record are included to further support clinical services. The subsequent phases will be on redevelopment of other buildings subject to further service requirements. The Kowloon Hospital Main Building has been built and handed over to KH in April 2002. The building provides 395 Psychiatric Beds, 124 Respiratory Medical Department beds and 186 Extended Care Beds, making a total of 705 beds (as at 28.07.2006). The building has 11 storeys, the wards occupy 8 storeys of the building and the remaining 3 storeys accommodate support facilities like Allied Health Service, Administration Offices, Medical Social Services, Pathology, Central Sterile Supplies, Medical Records, X-Ray, and Patient Catering etc. To improve its service, Kowloon Hospital commissioned a new building called Kowloon Hospital Rehabilitation Building with a total of 570 beds (as at 28.07.2006). In December 1999, 2 Rehabilitation wards with 126 beds and some Allied Health services were decanted to this new Building. On 17 January 2000, the service of the Margaret Trench Medical Rehabilitation Centre integrated with that of the Kowloon Hospital and its beds were accommodated in this new Building. A ward with 68 beds was opened in July 2000 providing convalescent support to patients of the United Christian Hospital. Kowloon Hospital Rehabilitation Building also houses comprehensive allied health outpatient services in Kowloon with an annual attendance of 90,074 (as at 31.03.2006). Patient Resources Centre, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre, Kapok Clubhouse, Toy Library and Rehabilitation Garden are other facilities in KH which provides various types of rehabilitation activities for patients. To further develop linkage of the hospital with the community, the hospital has developed various community services. KH Community Nursing Service provides nursing service for discharged patients. The Community Geriatric Assessment Service introduced by the Department of Rehabilitation, the Community Psychiatric Team and Psychogeriatric Outreach Team set up by the Department of Psychiatry provide structured out-reaching services to the community. KH has helped training health care professionals for years. Clinical attachment programmes are provided to student physiotherapists, student occupational therapists, Prosthetic and Orthotic students and student radiographers.
