It has gradually expanded its role as an extended care institution in which intensive transdisciplinary rehabilitative training programmes are designed for patients to facilitate their early reintegration into society. The hospital has also developed special programmes to cater for the need of those with chronic chest diseases, physical handicaps and complicated geriatric problems. The hospital also treat patients with tuberculosis and subacute chest diseases. The patient sources come from Chest Clinics under the Department of Health and referrals from other hospitals in Kowloon and the New Territories. The specialty provides X-ray examinations, lung function tests, bronchoscopies, ultrasonographies and other investigatory facilities. A Geriatric Day Hospital was opened in 1995 to enable continual care and treatment of discharged elderly patients so as to enhance their early reintegration into their family and their community. The hospital takes a holistic service approach. Recreational activities are regularly organised for long-stay in-patients as a means to promote psychological stimulation and social interaction. The hospital also tries to promote quality and dignity of life to the terminally ill patients during their remaining days through the work of hospice unit. Participation from relatives and volunteers in the treatment and caring processes are greatly encouraged.
